Field Management
AUTODESK BIM 360 PROJECTS
Working as a product designer for the BIM 360 mobile app. Collaborating with designers, product managers and developers, in all phases of the product delivery lifecycle (Discovery, Research, Design and Testing).
OVERVIEW
The construction industry is always changing and evolving. Every year new trends appear within the industry and construction project management apps are getting better and better with more features in order to make construction work easier and more efficient.
BIM 360 is a unified platform connecting your project’s teams and data in real-time. From design through construction, BIM 360 supports informed decision-making and leads to more predictable and profitable outcomes.

RESEARCH
GETTING TO KNOW OUR USERS
Firstly, an important part of my work was getting to know the construction industry from the inside.
This part included visiting construction sites in order to gain a better understanding of the industry we are designing for. As part of the visit we’ve got a tour of the different floors and stages of the building workflow.
PREPARATIONS
The first thing I did, before going to the site, was to prepare questions and a list of things to notice while in the site. Here are some examples of the things that I wanted to learn about our users:
How do they communicate with each other?
Do they currently using mobile apps while on site?
Do they have an Internet connection? is it stable?
How do they planing their work day?
PERSONAS
Based on the preliminary research,
I set up personas. I referred to them throughout the entire product development process.
Later on, I will I create user flows for the main tasks that each persona performs in the application.
TOP FINDINGS
The primary users of the mobile app are not used to advanced technology.
Age group is mostly 25–45yrs.
Constructions sites may be in remote locations without good connectivity.
Workers use different languages on site.
KEY INSIGHTS
Simplicity - Create traditional usage behaviours.
Metaphors - Use workflows, colours and iconography that are already in use at the construction site itself.
Universal - Using photos and icons can be a great tool to explain tasks, especially to workers who don’t speak the language.
Case Studies
Digital Signatures
This feature was designed for users working in the field, allows them to add signatures to their inspections, in order to consider an inspection complete.
Photos Module
Providing a central repository for all photos on a project helps users
to explore project status at various stages of the project.
BIM 360 Style Guide
BIM 360 products need to align with the general Autodesk style guide, use the same colour pallet, fonts, etc…
